Here in Houston, we aren’t exactly known for our cool summers. It feels like the second springtime shows up, we’re already sweating. But no matter the temperature, you still have every reason to celebrate your family! If you have been wanting to plan a family photo session but aren’t sure how to manage with the Texas heat, I’m here to help you out! As a Houston family photographer, I love working with parents to make sure they can have gorgeous pictures no matter the time of year! Here are some summer family photo ideas to help you stay cool throughout your session.
Prepare Your Family For A Perfect Session With These Summer Family Photo Ideas

Outfit Choices
Your family photo outfit will go a long way in helping you manage the summer heat. For mamas, I always suggest flowing maxi dresses. Not only are they super flattering, but the loose materials help you stay cool. Opt for breathable fabrics like soft lace or gauze. For the men, think light-weight. You can sub out denim for khaki and choose well-made tees or button-up shirts. Meanwhile, stylish shorts and summer dresses are always a perfect option for kids!

Colors to Consider
Next up, colors! When you are planning your family photo outfits, stay away from dark colors that will absorb the summer heat. Sure, black might be sleek and flattering, but after five minutes, you are going to be a sweaty mess. Instead of darker shades, go with neutrals and pastels. Cream, white, light tan, and beige work well, plus they are easy. You can go into pretty much any shop and find outfits for all ages that fit within the palette! If you do really love warmer hues, go for muted options. Trade in bold reds for soft peach or rust. And be sure to choose shades that will stick out from the natural backdrops.

Locations – Indoor vs Outdoor
If you want to stick with an indoor setting for your summer family photo session, trust me, you have my full support! Studio sessions will let you stay cool, which can make the process much easier when you are working with cranky kids. With studios, you can have beautiful pics without the stress. If you do decide to go outdoors, however, plan your day around it. Avoid heavy meals ahead of your session and be sure you’re hydrated. I even have some parents plan their sessions around water as a creative way to stay cool!

Time of Day
Last but not least, go with a cooler time of day. During the afternoon, the sun is extremely harsh, which is bad news for your comfort as well as for your lighting. Instead, opt for evening pictures, soaking up that lovely golden hour sun. You can also choose early morning sessions if you’d prefer. Just be sure to avoid mid-day sessions!
