Flowy vs Fitted
Pregnancy isn’t exactly known for being a comfortable experience. Everything hurts, your body is swollen, and your limbs can pop out of joint just from a yawn. When you are picking your maternity photos outfit, go for something that is both flattering and comfortable. Flowy dresses tend to give you a stylish, movable outfit perfect for showing off that adorable bump. I suggest going with something a little more fitted on top that flares out just over the belly. Not only will it look beautiful, but it will give you far more movement than you’ll find in more fitted options. I have a large selection of flattering dresses just like this in my client wardrobe collection that you may use for your session if you would like!
Dressy vs Casual
Whether you decide to go with dressy or casual maternity photo outfits is up to you. At-home sessions are better for dressing down, while outdoor and studio sessions are better for dressy outfits. Flowy maxi dresses tend to fit into either category. Your partner will also help set the tone of the session. They can elevate it with khakis and a button-up, or they can tone it down with light wash jeans and socks.

Colors
Pastel and neutral colors always photograph best! Not only are they extremely flattering and versatile, but it’s easy to build family outfits around pastel themes. If pastels aren’t really your thing, however, I would still advise sticking with lighter colors. Dark tones have a tendency to hide your bump, and we’re here to celebrate it!
Locations
Your maternity photos location and your outfit will go hand-in-hand. I have invested many hours finding the perfect locations in Houston to match my light and joyful photography style. These locations include indoor and outdoor options (or both if you would like more variety!) A helpful tip: if we will primarily be outside, bringing a pair of comfortable walking shoes is a good idea. You can slide into your nicer shoes for photos when we arrive to our spot. I am very careful when choosing locations to select spots that don’t require an excessive amount of walking, after four pregnancies I understand how uncomfortable that can be!

Think About The Houston Seasons When Thinking About Maternity Photo Outfit Ideas
We’re a little spoiled with our seasons here in Houston. We don’t have to plan our winter sessions around heavy coats and thick pants. Nonetheless, you want to take the weather into consideration ahead of your session. If you are taking your portraits during the summer, be sure to pick breathable fabrics that won’t raise your temperature. We can also opt for an air conditioned studio if you would prefer. During the colder months, use layers like tights and cardigans to stay warm.
