It can be tricky to decide what to wear for Spring family photos. Dressing your entire family in a way that coordinates and flatters everyone is not a small task! (Ask me how I know!) But never to worry, I’ve got you covered. In this blog, I’ll walk you through my process of how to dress your family for your Spring portrait session in a way that feels comfortable and flattering for Houston, Texas weather.
Choose your dress first! Select a dress for your Spring photos that flatters your figure, but also your skintone. I love the way lighter colors photograph for my light and airy style, but if you typically opt for darker colors, then what? I suggest sticking within the same family of color, but simply lightening it up a bit. For example, if you prefer plum colors, try a lavender. Or if you feel most confident in emerald, try sage green. If white makes you feel washed out, try an off white. This subtle changes can make all the difference!

Easiest of them all! For Dad, select a nice collared polo or button down shirt. It can be short sleeve or long sleeve depending on the season. I suggest short for Houston! Pair his shirt with either tan or grey slacks and he is all set! If you’d like to add a nice watch for style, go for it.

Ooooh this is where it all comes together for me (personally!) Why are little girl dresses just the best?! I LOVE brands like Zara, H&M, Rylee and Cru.. I mean the list could really just go on and on. To keep it simple and keep us from getting too carried away, pick a tone that goes well with your dress. If you’re dress is a solid color, it’s so beautiful to add a pattern here. And if your dress has a pattern, pick a main color from that pattern for her dress.

Copy and paste dad, pretty much! A sweet button down shirt or polo is perfect paired with slacks that are tan or grey. To keep him from being an exact twin, you could use a different complimenting tone of button down like white or tan if dad has sage.

For little bitties around or under one year old, I love a sweet little romper. Paired of course with bare feet and a hair bow for little girls. The simpler and the more we can adore their little dimply features- the better!
A few final tips! Color reflects, which is another reason why muted tones are the way to go. Bright orange, pink, or any other vibrant shade really casts color onto skin and can make your images appear “muddy.” Just the slightest off balance on one person’s face can really offset the entire image.
Blue jeans are so convenient! But not super flattering. Having your guys wear tan or grey slacks makes the entire photo appear softer, creamier, and overall more flattering. Fun science fact: your eye is drawn to contrast which means the darkest part of your photo. I don’t think anyone’s goal is to draw the eye to the pants we’re wearing. Unless maybe it is then, carry on!
